Sapporo Snow Festival Sculptures Demolished To Avoid Collapse

February 12, 2018 – The executive committee of the 69th Sapporo Snow Festival demolished five small snow sculptures last night at Odori Park, which had partly broken up and melted due to high temperatures and rainfall, to avoid the danger of collapse.

The five demolished sculptures consist of four at International Square in Odori 11 chome and one at Citizen’s Square in Odori 9 chome.

A staff member confirmed at around 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 10 that two other sculptures also at International Square had collapsed and the committee used rope in front of the sculptures to prevent visitors from approaching them.

Tomoyo Ishiyama, 79, a tourist from Yokohama, said, “I visited the festival for the first time. I’m surprised this happened.”

The festival is due to end this evening.
